In New York City we have what is known as “The Tabloid Wars”. The New York Daily News and The New York Post are forever at odds, striving to one-up the other and smear each others name.
Recently, The Post celebrated a day when circulation topped that of The News and even the gray lady herself, The New York Times. Earlier in the year The News had a fun with The Post’s well publicized Page Six controversy.
This battle for dominance has spilled over to a price war. The Post dropped it’s daily price from 50 cents to a mere quarter. The News responded by keeping their prices the same–kinda. Around Grand Central Station and other transportation hubs The News offers a budgeted “Hawkers Edition” that costs the same as a copy of The Post, leveling the playing field and leaving the choice up to content and preference.
Recently things have changed. On a recent trip home, I was surprised to learn that the Hawkers Edition has a limited window before the price goes back to 50 cents. The “Hawker” had covered all the quarter papers with the half-buck ones and told me he could not sell the cheaper one after 7PM.
How shocking.
What was more shocking though was when he pointed to a copy of The Post. In the evening the post jumps 300% to a staggering 75 cents!
That’s a lot of coin for old news. Needless to say, I read the free papers instead.
